This week on Seizing Life® we conclude our two-part episode about infantile spasms (IS). In our previous episode, our panel of experts outlined everything that parents and caregivers should know about infantile spasms; what to look for, what to do, and what to expect from treatment options. In part 2, we focus on the research being conducted to improve understanding, detection, and treatment options for IS.

CURE Epilepsy’s CEO Beth Dean details the organization’s unique team-science approach to infantile spasms and how the results are paving the way for new research and treatment approaches. Beth also explains the search for biomarkers and why they offer hope for potential targeted and preventative treatments. TSC Alliance President and CEO, Kari Rosbeck discusses the first biomarker study for tuberous sclerosis and epilepsy, and how the findings of that study have led to the first preventative clinical trial for epilepsy in the United States. Additionally, Dr. Renée Shellhaas summarizes the most important information for parents to take-away about infantile spasms in order to identify IS, consult with physicians, and advocate for their baby’s care.
