Post-Traumatic Epilepsy: What We Know and Where the Research is Going
This month on Seizing Life® we speak with Dr. Elisa Zanier of the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, Italy about the current state of research into Post-Traumatic Epilepsy (PTE) in the wake of a recent International Conference on PTE co-hosted by CURE Epilepsy.
This past May, CURE Epilepsy and the Mario Negri Institute co-hosted the International Conference on Post-Traumatic Epilepsy in Milan, Italy. The conference brought together leading clinical and preclinical experts in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and epilepsy to focus on PTE with the goal of determining an actionable plan to design clinical trials aimed at developing preventative therapies and treatments for PTE. Dr. Elisa Zanier, Head of the Laboratory of Traumatic Brain Injury and Neuroprotection at the Mario Negri Institute and a Co-Chair of the conference, provides an overview of post-traumatic epilepsy and shares some of the key takeaways from the four-day conference. Dr. Zanier explains what post-traumatic epilepsy is, how it’s connected to TBI, what we understand about PTE, and what we still need to learn in order to develop new therapies and move forward to clinical trials. Dr. Zanier also discusses the promise of biomarkers, the importance of including the patient’s perspective within the PTE research landscape, and the potential next steps determined by the conference participants. If you or a loved one have been impacted by a traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic epilepsy, you will want to check out this episode of Seizing Life® to understand where PTE research is and where it’s going.
